Match Report

Squires Gate 1 - 0 Padiham

Squires Gate moved up to 8th in the table with this impressive win at home to a Padiham side that have proved hard to beat this season.

The first half was a very even affair with both sides creating very few chances that caused either keeper too much concern. It was Gate as early as the 1st minute who created their best chance when Chris Bennett intercepted the ball from Padiham's left back and drove into the 18yd box, his cross was unable to find another Gate player and the danger was cleared.

Padiham settled into the game and started to impose themselves on the first half putting Gate's defence on the back foot, the ever impressive Ford and Bartlett stood strong with the visitors only being able to test Speight from outside Gate's box.

At the start of the second half it was Gate again who started brightly with Isaac Kusaloka missing the goal from 12yds with only the keeper to beat, his strike went sailing over the cross bar. The striker was to eventually get his rewards for his persistent in a dramatic finish to the game.

With Gate on the front foot it was the hosts who controlled the second half with Padiham creating very little once again, Kusaloka went close again for Gate as he went one on one with the keeper who saved at the striker's feet.

As the game entered into injury time at the end of the second half, Gate's danger man Chris Bennett was brought down in the box to earn his side a penalty after the referees assistant had signalled to the referee of the offence. After having missed a penalty in Gate's previous fixture Bennett reluctantly gave the ball to Kusaloka who secured 3 points for the home side although the striker's penalty was nearly saved by the keeper who managed to get a hand to the ball.

Gate now go into Saturday's away game at Congleton in good spirit although they will be missing the services of Tom Bartlett who starts a 4 match suspension. Congleton sitting 4th in the table will be looking to stop a run of defeats that have seen them slip away from the promotion chasing pack.

Team: Speight, McCann, Ford, Bartlett, Thomas, Richards, Osbourne, Benfield, Ryan, Kusaloka, Bennett. Subs: Mayers, Harvie, McKendrick, Booth, Horrocks.
