Match Report
Clifton Rangers v Ladner Selects at the Gate
Our friends at The Inn on the Prom recently made a contact in the travel industry who is a supporter of a Junior Club in Canada, Ladner Selects, who were planning a tour of the North West, and were a game short in their itinerary. We were delighted to help, and we duly invited our pals at Clifton Rangers to provide the opposition, which they duly did by turning out their U13 side on Thursday last.
The visitors are from a small town close to Vancouver, British Columbia, and had to endure a 17 hour flight, over the North Pole to reach Heathrow, then a 4 hour coach drive to their base in Chester - and to think our players moan about going to New Mills! They seem to have had a great time, taking in York, North Wales, trips to Everton FC for training, and Premier League games at Man Utd and Blackburn, before coming to Blackpool for a spot of culture.
The game against Clifton went well, watched by a good crowd, in lovely weather, and we made an "International" of it, with 3 proper officials leading the teams out, and the lights turned on for the second half. If our Chairman is reading this, it was for the last 4 minutes. The age gap told in the end, with our former Colony running out comfortable winners, but both sets of boys mingled well after the game, enjoying the hotpot provided by Clifton.
We then found out that the visitors had lost their final fixture on the coming Saturday, so we offered them the chance to visit us again 2 days later, and they were happy to accept; this time Clifton's U15's took up the challenge, and ran out close winners. Again, the game was played in great spirit, and the visitors handed over gifts to their opponents before enjoying sandwiches provided by the Inn on the Prom, then heading off to Ewood Park.
This was a great opportunity for Clifton's lads to meet other footy-mad boys from the other side of the world, and it was also good for Gate to see their facilities used by such appreciative people.
