Match Report

Bacup Borough 3 - 1 Squires Gate

Gate's highly respectable season ended in defeat at Bacup, but with a little more luck in front of goal, they could have salvaged at least a point.

Twice before, this fixture had been postponed, but for once, Bacup's pitch was playable, and both sides did their best to provide entertainment on a bleak day. Gate took the lead on 15 minutes when Steve Hibbert - handed the Player of the Year award by Manager Andy Clarkson- played Chris Bennett through, and he was brought down for a clear penalty which he put away himself. Marc Beattie caught the eye, and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with three good shots in the space of a few minutes, which were all well saved. Bacup's star man Tommy Turner brought a superb point-blank save from Andy Speight, but then the hosts levelled when Steve Smith hammered in an unstoppable drive into Speight's top corner from the edge of the box, giving the keeper no chance.

Ten minutes into the second half, Bacup were ahead, when John Robinson emulated Smith's strike with a cracker from 20 yards, and they could have gone further ahead, but Speight did well to keep out a smart drive from Rhodri Giggs. As the pressure mounted, Speight was again the hero, saving a penalty after Ford had fouled Turner, the victim taking the kick himself. But Turner did eventually manage to register with a debatable goal scored whilst his marker, Kevan Ford, was still struggling to regain position after being clearly fouled whilst up for a corner at the other end.
